PhD defence Christiaan S.C. Vermeulen
On Thursday 23 May, Christiaan S.C. Vermeulen successfully defended his PhD thesis on: ‘Hot for Teacher: Studies on Teacher Career and Skill Development in the Netherlands’
Supervisor: prof. dr. Inge de Wolf
Co-supervisor: dr. Bart Golsteyn
This dissertation studies Dutch teachers’ careers and skills. It finds evidence of matching between primary teacher and student characteristics, but no negative consequences for student performance. Second, primary school teachers face worse labour market outcomes outside of teaching. Third, low dropout rates at the teacher training program level relate to a higher supply of teachers for at least nine years after graduation. Finally, Dutch teachers are highly skilled at the bottom of the skills distribution, while performing relatively poorly at the top. Recommendations to address the growing teacher shortage include reducing teacher training student attrition, increased efforts enthusing highly skilled students and non-western migrants for teaching, and stimulating full-time employment.
